D
Berman Gallery is proud to announce a solo exhibition
of charcoal drawings and hand-painted inkjet prints
by Houston artist, Randy Twaddle. After Twaddle's
last solo exhibition in 1995, he took a hiatus from
the art world to venture into video editing, and eventually
co-founded the Houston media production company, ttweak.
He has recently reemerged from the studio with a new
variation of his large-scale charcoal drawings, using
shop-worn phrases as his subject matter. Twaddle has
also created a series of starkly beautiful digital
inkjet prints with phrases culled from the music world.
Born in Missouri, Twaddle has a BFA from Northwest
Missouri State University and an MFA from the University
of Houston. He has exhibited widely throughout the
U. S. and was a recipient of a National Endowment
for the Arts fellowship in 1987. His work is in many
private and museum collections. Twaddle lives in Houston
with his wife, painter Marianne Green (also represented
by D Berman) , and eight-month old son, Cyrus (not
yet represented by D Berman) .
About this new work, Twaddle writes, "I maintain
a list of clichés and common phrases (as well
as band names, book and song titles, and lyrics) which
contain the conjunction and , reordered so the words
on either side of that conjunction are reversed. .
. I don' t remember the impetus for my initial alteration,
but in the six years since I unwittingly wrote The
Vandellas and Martha in my sketchbook, I've come
to see it as a reclamation strategy particularly appropriate
for use in a culture that's tired and sick."
