d
berman gallery opens 2004 with a pairing of two Central Texas artists, each
of whom has an unusual and surprising way of viewing the world.
Bale Creek Allen’s creations are sculptural constructions made of neon and found
objects, and versions of natural forms such as sticks and tumbleweeds; and obsessively
detailed drawings.
Malcolm Bucknall’s current paintings and drawings meticulously conflate the
costumed bodies from 19th century photographs and Elizabethan portraiture with
animal heads. As in myth and fairytale the animal human mix encourages a childlike
directness.
Allen and Bucknall, separated by several decades of age and very different backgrounds,
both use whimsy and craft to challenge and entertain the viewer. It is the very
eccentricity of their art that joins them.
Allen studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and has exhibited
throughout Texas and the U.S. He lives and works in Wimberley.
Bucknall has studied at Chelsea Art School, London, the University of Texas
(BFA), and the University of Washington (MFA). He has exhibited in New York,
Seattle, New Orleans, and throughout Texas and the Southwest. He lives and works
in Austin.
This exhibition opens on January 22, 2004 with
