d
berman gallery is pleased to present an exhibit
of new work by Gladys Poorte and Naomi Schlinke.
The
exhibition opens on Thursday, 24 August 2006, with
a reception from 6 – 8 PM, and will continue
through 30 September 2006. Please join us for a
gallery talk on Saturday, 2 September, at 1:00 PM.
Before beginning each painting, Gladys Poorte sets
up large elaborate dioramas populated with ordinary
objects, household items, and toys. She then paints
from these tableaus, creating narratives with intriguing
scenes taking place in a parallel world, which she
says, “… echoes our own world. It’s
a way of looking at ourselves in the mirror. …
The process is similar to that of children who use
toys and other objects to create a story. My characters
and stories, however, are not imaginary, but those
of our real world.” Ms. Poorte received a
BA in English at Instituto Nacional Superior del
Profesorado in her native city of Buenos Aires,
and also studied studio art at the University of
Texas in Austin.
Of her painting series, “Shadow and Refraction”,
Naomi Schlinke says, “These alchemical images
are formed by bio-mechanical episodes of dynamic
change that yield images charged by our shared primordial
narrative. These chimerae oscillate in a sea of
hypnotic white." Her multi-chambered pieces
are like musical compositions where each part is
linked together to create a whole. These ink paintings
reflect "genetic material" from other
pieces in this body of work, as well as past work
of hers, referencing a history of layers. Ms. Schlinke
received both her BA and MA in dance from the University
of Wisconsin. Her background in dance is evident
through the strong sense of movement in her paintings.
