FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

d berman gallery is pleased to present Lens, an exhibit of new work by George Krause and Sean Perry. Both of these acclaimed Texas artists work in black and white photography, and though they are separated by decades in age, both produce striking effects of lingering quietness in their work.

George Krause’s series of life-size nudes present the human body in a serenely ethereal environment. His use of the misty sfumato technique in these insightful black and white portraits highlight the more often dismissed parts of an individual’s physique. Kneecaps and fingertips, tattoos and the occasional adornment speak volumes in the absolute stillness of white light. Until his recent retirement, Mr. Krause taught at the University of Houston where he created the photography program. He was the first photographer to win both the Prix de Rome and the Fulbright/Hays grant, and he has received two Guggenheim fellowships. His work has been shown nationally and internationally in New York, Denver, Paris, Bogota, and most recently, Moscow. He works from his home in Wimberley, Texas.

Sean Perry’s photographs from the series “Transitory” focus on the industrial objects of human communication: cell towers, satellite dishes, and other mechanical and architectural structures that, as Mr. Perry says, “display an unexpected beauty and graceful clarity, only briefly revealed. The images exist in that transitory moment – between a tension of conflict and harmony, where intent is manifest and unfettered.” This tension is presented skillfully and carefully in his toned silver gelatin prints, which earned him acclaim as one of the Austin Chronicle’s “10 Best Artists of 2004.” Mr. Perry attended the Berklee College of Music and an instructor of photography and technology at Austin Community College.

This exhibition opens on 4 August 2005 with a reception from 6 – 8 PM, and will continue through 10 September 2005. A gallery talk will be held on Saturday, 3 September 2005, at 1:00 PM.
