STATEMENT BY NAOMI SCHLINKE,
March 2004

Within the fretful, joyful, banal, and sublime daily process of making art, cosmologies may rise and fall in an afternoon. That story forms the bedrock of these paintings. Life is always exchanging present for past, and past as present. I have tried to allow the agitation and partnership between these two dimensions to shape this work and to unfold in the imagination. This aliveness fills and empties with the myriad qualities of movement and stillness. My vocabulary arises from a somatic basis as much as from a purely visual one, reflecting those forces at work in the body, in painting, and in life.
