My works focus on topical subject matter and the dissolution of hierarchically motivated distance between drawing and onlooker. The destruction of this distance encourages dialogue between artwork and viewer. Several works feature participatory elements that seduce viewers to interact directly with works. Some are coated with a special varnish that accepts dry-erase markers. Participants are prompted by wall text to “write, draw or scribble their thoughts directly on the work. The combination of visual, tactile and interactive elements stimulates, conscious, unconscious and mnemonic responses.
My materials hold properties that relate to the concepts
of the works; they include: correction fluid, custom made rubber stamps, dry
transfer letters, scotch tape and other found materials. Some works, such as
“Friendly Fire,” depict figures in landscape settings, where the
environment acts as container for seemingly disparate elements. In these drawings,
pixilated, desert landscape is based on contemporary digital camouflage taken
from actual army uniforms, worn in geopolitical conflicts. These landscapes
investigate psychological and geographical dislocation experienced while “virtual”
images are viewed through mass-media filters.
