d berman gallery presents new work by two Texas
women artists responding through their artwork to different aspects of their
environment of the last few years.
Ann Matlock is one of the state’s most accomplished weavers. Her lush
and richly colorful new works are based on watercolors she produced during her
recent travels in Europe and also Morocco, where she taught natural dye workshops
to women in Ait Hanza and Sefrou. She says, “In all my work, I am interested
in conveying a feeling that the weaving that is presented is just a fragment
of something larger, not a picture contained by its edges.” Her tapestries
are woven from hand-dyed and hand-spun silks and overlaid with unique brocade.
Matlock maintains her studio in the Texas hill country, and also directs and
teaches in the fibers program in the studio art department at Lamar University
in Beaumont.
Marjorie Moore’s emotional, sculptural work expresses her frustration
with living a comfortable existence in Austin while military action in the middle
east disrupts (and sometimes ends) life for residents of Iraq. In her statement,
Moore refers to her materials: “The parts of birds, maimed by vehicles,
or cats, or mishap, I have collected and placed in my studio for some time.
. . I wanted to make these bones and feathers beautiful again, a kind of reliquary
for the loss of flight and freedom. .. It took me some time to understand that
what I was doing was about the war. It could be, of course, about all war, but
the horror and plight of American troops and the citizens of Iraq are so prevalent,
so in our lives every day, that I was compelled to somehow make these pieces
about this particular war.” Moore lives and works in Austin, and she teaches
at The Austin Museum of Art School at Laguna Gloria.
