Katie
Maratta and Owen McAuley’s exhibit at d berman gallery
will be two separate explorations of the evocative
qualities of space and place, and the personal connotations
associated with endless expanses of land, confined
locations, and the ordinary objects contained in each.
Katie
Maratta says of her work: “My subject matter is the
Texas horizon. My pieces are typically 1 inch high
and 4 feet long. This format allows me to mirror the
reality. Because the pieces can not be seen all at
once, the viewer has to “travel” the work. … They
should feel cramped and crowded, but they manage to
convey a surprising sense of space. … They share a
quality with Chinese porcelain of the complete world
that one can hold in one’s hand.” Ms. Maratta received
her BA in studio art at Princeton University, BA,
Studio Art. After several years working as a cartoonist
and illustrator, she is now happy to concentrate on
drawings of her adopted state of Texas.
Owen
McAuley says of his work: “My work is primarily about
place, the power of a particular place to burn an
impression on the mind regardless of whether it has
any actual importance. In taking such a place and
rendering it meticulously, to explore all its aspects
in depth, I hope that my work lends a place its own
power and opens it to investigation of all its possible
histories, or even futures.” Mr. McAuley earned a
BFA in painting at Eastern Washington University,
and an MFA in painting from the University of Texas
at Austin. He is currently living and working in New
York City.
